Every creature is prey of something . . . or someone. That doesn’t mean we’re evil.

Goodreads summary

As the last child in a family of daughters, seventeen-year-old Janneke was raised to be the male heir. While her sisters were becoming wives and mothers, she was taught to hunt, track, and fight. On the day her village was burned to the ground, Janneke—as the only survivor—was taken captive by the malicious Lydian and eventually sent to work for his nephew Soren.

Janneke’s survival in the court of merciless monsters has come at the cost of her connection to the human world. And when the Goblin King’s death ignites an ancient hunt for the next king, Soren senses an opportunity for her to finally fully accept the ways of the brutal Permafrost. But every action he takes to bring her deeper into his world only shows him that a little humanity isn’t bad—especially when it comes to those you care about.

White stag is the kind of novel you pick up on a lazy saturday afternoon which you finish it in one sitting and have dreams for a month.

Why do you need to read it?

World – Building

The book deals with an epic fantasy setting with humans living outside the border.

And a pure white stag being a creature of stability is awesome.

The afterlife for humans are described in two ways.

  1. If they die natural , they would be reunited with their families.
  2. If they didn’t , they would be sorta in the middle .. like as spirits where they died.
  • Goblins and humans apparently believe in Norse mythology in the book .

Detailing

Tiny details mean a lot more when I read it the second time… when soren is trying to sit on a throne like chair which is carved with both predator and prey.

Each and every little detail of difference Janneke notes between Goblins and humans makes the story so real and act as the backbone to the world-creation.

Emotions

Emotions are very well played. Everytime soren calls her “janneka” is beautiful.

Characters

Its hard not to give spoilers . But the characters are very unique and special.

Soren has a strong caring aura and a gentle heart ( many heart eyes)

Janneke is so powerful , has self doubts but she is way more than a cliche MC. She is damn cool.

I couldn’t deny that in his own sick , twisted way he cared about me, and in my own sick, twisted way I cared about him too.

My opinions

The writing style , the expressions used are a bit repetitive and dragged in some areas. But I hope this would be rectified.

There are a lot of animal similes used. Like a bat , like a horse and all. Since there were no information saying Permafrost actually had these , I assume these were the way Janneke kept her sanity and connection.

The overall experience of the book was a fun chase. And the ending has hooked me up.

I need the sequel right now!!!!!!

Perfect book for

  • YA fantasy lovers
  • Action packed fantasy lovers
